Over the years, Call of Duty has undergone many iterations of its robust weapon customization, arguably not always for the better, leaving it feeling more like a spreadsheet than a loadout system. Enter Gunny, Modern Warfare 4’s new tool that simplifies the process and gives newcomers and veterans alike quick access to complex loadouts. This guide explains everything you need to know about the Gunny system in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, including how it works.

How the Gunny System Works in MW4

You can access Gunny from the Gunsmith menu by pressing R2/RT/2 when creating a custom class—you'll find Gunny in the bottom right corner.

Once you've picked your gun, select your preferred playstyle —long-range, balanced, or short-range, for example—and let Gunny swap out your attachments to fit your needs. Each Gunny build requires a certain progression level with that particular weapon in order to access it.

If you prefer the more traditional method of equipping your weapons with specific attachments via the Gunsmith, that option is still there. Gunny isn't meant to be a replacement for full customization; it’s a tool to get you into the action faster without tweaking every attachment between matches.

What happens if you don’t like a particular loadout? Not to worry, because you can re-roll the same playstyle and get completely different attachments. You can even swap out a single attachment and keep the rest of the loadout if you want. For example, I wanted a run-and-gun loadout for my PPSH, but I didn't like the small magazine it gave me, so I re-equipped the Drum Mag to reduce how often I needed to reload, while keeping the playstyle intact.

It’s important to note that all the combinations are based on your unlocked attachments for the given weapon, so the more you level up your weapon, the more possibilities are available to you– Gunny won’t just equip attachments you haven’t unlocked yet.

Ultimately, Gunny reduces the friction between the player and the customization options, but doesn’t hamstring the multiplayer experience with limitations on the full toolkit.
