Call of Duty: Black Ops III[]

With Gunsmith, players can design and create cosmetic variants of pre-existing weapons, outfitting their guns with the choice of five various attachments including an optical attachment and Paintjobs. Most weapon attachments have approximately four to five cosmetic variants which allows the player to further change the appearance of their weapon, alongside these features players can name their weapon.

The players can make custom camos for their weapons to the top and sides with up to 64 layers, similarly to the emblem creator. The players can also inspect their weapons with camo and attachments in full 3D and rename their weapons from the actual gun name to a custom, completely desired one. Weapon painting is absent on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, allowing the player to customize their gun with five attachments and gun perks from more categories than normal. Attributes normally considered "integral" to a gun, such as the barrel length and the caliber, can be changed, allowing for weapons like the base 9mm AUG to utilize 5.56 rounds and function similar to an assault rifle. Some of these changes, such as changing the stock on a MP5, will change the weapon's name as well. Barrel attachments and certain blueprint variations can also change the iron sights of a weapon.

Cosmetically modified variants known as "Blueprints" are available to players to use, and possess pre-added attachments. Players can choose to use these pre-modified weapons in their loadouts while the base weapon itself may not have these modifications unlocked. Blueprints allow players to use weapons they may not yet have unlocked, though they may not change the attachments on the blueprint until the base weapon is unlocked.

As of the Season Three, Gunsmith Customs was added. It allows players to use different blueprint variations of attachments combined on a single weapon. For example, a user of the AK-47 may use the Monocle Reflex Sight seen on the Pink Perforator blueprint in tandem with the Skeleton Stock seen on the Revolution blueprint.

Call of Duty: Mobile[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Mobile, having been added to the game on August 15, 2020, as part of the Season 9 Conquest Update. It works the same way as in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, allowing the player to customize their gun with various attachments and Gun Perks, though Blueprints now only come in Epic to Mythic variants.

Gunsmith was updated in Season 13 Wint3r War; the attachments stats are now displayed with accurate changes in percentages, similarly to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. As of a patch, the sum of all of the stats changed (if at all) by attachments can be seen.

As of another patch, the "Weapon Comparison System" was added, allowing players to check the numeric stats of a weapon and compare them to other weapons (or the same weapon with different attachments). For example, a player can simultaneously pull up the stats for the M4 and XM4, and determine the difference between their damage ranges and fire-rate.

DMZ: Recon[]

Within the DMZ; Recon gamemode, the Gunsmith operates much differently from the other modes. While guns still need to level up to unlock their attachments, certain attachments are locked behind certain challenges - for example, Granulated Grip Tape requires players to reach Reputation Level 6 for any one faction, while attachments such as the USS 9's .41 AE magazines require submitting a Mythic USS 9 that meets certain requirements.

Weapons will spawn with a default set of attachment slots, depending on the weapon and rarity. Weapons of higher rarities (Epic and up), will have additional, randomized slots that may be opened up for use. Any Ultra-tier weapons ignore this randomization and have all slots available to use when acquired.

Legendary or better weapons also gain access to Attribute Affixes, which can modify the performance of the weapon. Depending on the rarity of the weapon with the Affix, this Affix may have stronger or weaker effects.

Some attachments have now been designated as "Ultra"-tier, meaning that on top of their base attributes, they have an additional perk. For example, the .41 AE magazines mentioned above deal additional damage to unarmored body-parts.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and working exactly as in previous games, with the difference that there are no gun perks. By default, up to 5 attachments can be equipped on a weapon. With the Gunfighter Wildcard, up to 8 attachments can be equipped on one weapon.

As of the Season Two Reloaded, Gunsmith Customs are available. Like Modern Warfare, it allows players to use different blueprint variations of attachments combined on a single weapon.

Call of Duty: Vanguard[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Vanguard, and working exactly as in previous games. Now, up to 10 attachments can be equipped on a weapon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, dubbed “Gunsmith 2.0”. Only 5 attachments can be put on weapons, and the system has been extensively revamped with the addition of Weapon Platforms. Weapon Platforms groups weapons who share manufacturers together - for example, the M4 Platform contains the M4 and M16. Weapon Platforms generally share Barrels, Stocks, and Rear Grips with each other - for example, the Demo D50 Buffer Tube unlocked on the M4 can be equipped on the M16 once acquired. Optics, Underbarrels, and Muzzles however are universal across weapons. For example, the Echoless-80 suppressor is available to use for all intermediate caliber assault rifles.

Another major addition to the Gunsmith is Weapon Tuning, which allows for every attachment on a weapon, once the weapon reaches the requisite level, to be tuned for certain traits. A sight for example, can be tuned to zoom in farther and aim down sights faster than its base variant. Blueprints also sport tuning, being marked "Pro-Tuned" and will list the traits primarily favored by the blueprint.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, with the system being most identical to the way it worked in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II with a few differences.

Weapon tuning is absent, and weapons are now unlocked in the traditional fashion by leveling up the player. While weapons are no longer explicitly categorized in platforms, weapons can still share attachments, such AMR9 and Riveter, or Holger 26 and Holger 556.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and features elements of all its predecessors. By default, up to 5 attachments can be equipped on a weapon. With the Gunfighter Wildcard, up to 8 attachments can be equipped on one weapon. Weapons also can share attachments, like in Modern Warfare III.

Players are also able to customize their weapon, with the return of the Gunsmith Customs system from Black Ops Cold War. Weapon builds that are created, including any cosmetic addition such as weapon charm and decal, are able to be instantly equipped onto other loadouts in Multiplayer, Zombies and Warzone.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and remains similar to Black Ops 6. By default, up to 5 attachments can be equipped on a weapon. With the Gunfighter Wildcard, up to 8 attachments can be equipped on one weapon. Universal Attachments return from Modern Warfare II, III, and Black Ops 6.

Like in Black Ops 6, players are able to customize their weapon, with the return of the Gunsmith Customs system from Black Ops Cold War. Weapon builds that are created, including any cosmetic addition such as weapon charms and decals, are able to be instantly equipped onto other loadouts in Multiplayer, Endgame, Zombies and Warzone. Players can now also share their weapon builds with other players by giving them a "Build Code" that can be inputted into the Gunsmith, allowing for a duplication of the weapon.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4[]

The Gunsmith returns in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with the system featuring aspects from its predecessors. Like in Modern Warfare III, weapons are unlocked by leveling up the player and are not categorized in platforms. Attachments are now shared via each weapon class, and weapons themselves follow the similar mechanic from Modern Warfare in which weapons have higher levels consisting of attachments exclusive for each weapon.

Additionally, a new mechanic known as "Gunny" brings a Gunnery Sergeant's eye to weapon customization, helping players quickly assemble effective builds based on their preferred playstyle and unlocked attachments. Gunny can instantly configure practical close-, mid-, or long-range weapon builds tailored to different approaches to combat, while still leaving room for further customization and refinement.

Finally, progression expands through the Apex Attachment system, which is a specialized unlock earned by fully progressing a weapon to max level. These Apex Attachments introduce unique modifications that can significantly change how that weapon behaves in combat. Depending on the attachment, they can alter handling, firing behavior, tactical utility, stealth capability, or combat role, giving fully leveled weapons new ways to perform beyond standard Gunsmith customization.
